What do you want your title to say about you?

Happy Monday,

I subscribe to several random blogs, one of them is The Adventures of Dairy Carrie…I think I need a drink. In today’s posting she talks about the title we label ourselves with and what it says to others, what it signifies, and ultimately are we short changing ourselves by using a lesser title? So what does the title you give yourself say? How do others interpret it? Is Extension Educator/Assistant/Specialist appropriate for us? If you could rename our title what would you call us? I am kind of fond of “problem-solving, money-saving, outside of box thinking, fun-having Educator” :) What about you?

About lindsaychichester

Hi! I am an University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Educator focusing in livestock, agricultural, and food systems. Agriculture runs deep in my veins as I grew up on a cattle and sheep ranch in Northern California, was a 10 year 4-H member, received a formal education in agricultural systems, and have worked a variety of jobs in the industry. I have a Master of Science in Animal Science, a Master of Art in Speech Communications, and a PhD in Systems Agriculture from West Texas A&M University. Join me as I make agriculture fun and exciting while highlighting the science and research.

  1. I think the question of “how do others interpret it?” is an interesting one. I’m wondering whether the general public makes much of a distinction between “educator” and the more traditional “county agent.” At least, I’m still referred to as the “county agent” or “ag agent” by the majority of clientele in my county.

Monte, I agree. I think most people, and especially the older generation still prefer ag agent or county agent. Very good point!

  2. Katie Pleskac says:

I would call us ‘the jack of all trades” educators.

  3. Kae Russell says:

The position I hold is called 4-H Program Manager & Youth Development Coordinator which I think sounds stronger than Extension Assistant, is much more descriptive and explains the position better to stakeholders. We need to communicate outside our core group and a job/position title can be an effective marketing tool. It is a little lengthy though!
